A Simple Morning Routine Yields Health and Serenity

Cold, dreary winter mornings can be hard to face. The temptation to sleep can be very tempting this time of year. It may be an excellent opportunity to consider a more soothing morning routine recommended in the Ayurvedic tradition, instead of subjecting yourself to the jarring alarm that makes you jump right from bed and into your day. The Ayurvedic belief, based on India's traditional medical system, is that awakening gradually and following a specific routine contributes to overall well-being. Try these simple steps:
Early to Rise: Awaken each day before the sun. If you need an alarm, purchase one that rings with a series of chimes. Since Ayurveda is all about living in harmony with nature's cycles, make sure that you get to bed early. 6pm-10pm is considered to provide sleep of the best quality; 10pm-2am is when the body detoxes. Missing out on either period of time contributes to fatigue.
Drink Water: Place a glass of water on your bedside table for the next morning so it can adjust to room temperature (Ayurveda recommends against drinking cold fluids). Once your eyes are open, sit up and drink the water. The point is to replenish fluids, stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, while encouraging an elimination of waste.
Purify and Cleanse: Once you're feeling awake, empty your bladder and bowels; scrape your tongue, brush your teeth, and wash up. Stretch your muscles with a little yoga and practice some deep breathing. A brisk walk or the like would be ideal if you have time.
Nourish Yourself: Eat breakfast in a relaxed and mindful way, focusing on the ritual rather than on the tv, newspapers, and chores. Sit down to enjoy foods that are in season. Skip the pastries, bagels and sugary cereals, and indulge in whole grains, plain yogurt, fruit, and nuts. Try to incorporate 6 tastes (sweet, salty, spicy, sour, pungent, astringent). Recipe of the Month: Prep Once, Eat Multiple Times

Embrace an Ayurvedic breakfast. Start with a cup of green tea (add a piece of fresh ginger), a piece of whole grain toast, and a tablespoon of almond butter. Then enjoy a cup of plain greek yogurt with some natural granola (Udi's is yum) and blueberries. Still hungry? Add a bowl of fruit. This balanced meal will provide all of the 6 recommended tastes along with sustainable energy throughout the day. There are many other items to add depending on your dietary needs and preferences. Be in touch and we can work together to figure that out.
