Simple Ways to Safely Enjoy the Sun

...and surprise...I am not going to say "wear your spf". Over the past few years I have slathered myself in sunscreen, going as high as spf 100, and not at all realizing the chemicals that were soaking into my bloodstream and burning my skin. There are natural sunscreens -- zinc oxide and titanium dioxide -- but even those have toxic factors. More importantly, by blocking yourself from all of the UVA(A = Aging)/UVB(B = Burning) rays, you are also starving yourself of Vitamin D and a deficiency in this nutrient is a whole other topic. So enjoy some of those wonderful rays in moderation and protect yourself in ways other than spf lotions. There is no credible scientific evidence that moderate sun exposure causes melanoma.

Get Your Sun Protection from Food: indulge in a high antioxidant diet of berries, pomegranate, tomatoes (heated provides the most lycopene benefits, but cold is good too), red peppers, green tea and high omega diet of flax oil and fish. A healthy diet is the key to preventing free radical damage. Add some Avocado or Olive Oil for maximum nutrient absorption.

Wear a Hat: There are hats for every occasion. Your walk to work, a day at the beach, and a run in the park. Athleta.com offers some great, reasonably priced options.

Introduce your Skin to the Sun Slowly: Just 15-30 minutes of exposed skin a day can produce provide you with enough benefits - aka Vitamin D production - do not lie out for more than 30 minutes without protection from a hat, umbrella, or a safe sunscreen (I just told the US FDA to finally issue sunscreen safety standards. 33 yrs is too long to let us burn.
